India Pale ales were created by Hodgsons brewery to provide British troops stationed in India with English ale as well as to provide the shipping industry with cargo on their return trip from England to India. This beer had to be robust to withstand the long voyage, elevated heat and constant motion of the ship. At the time of its creation IPA was considered a light beer due to the primary use of pale malts and high attenuating yeasts it tended to be drier and less full bodied than the brown beers of the day. It is characteristically an amber to copper colored beer with assertive hop bitterness and a dry finish. English versions have less hop flavor and aroma and are darker in color than their American counterparts.
The Luplin Fix Kit contains 6.6 lbs Malt extract, 3 lbs of milled base and specialty grains for a mini mash, hops, priming sugar, fining agents and a Wyeast Activator smack pack
Each Bacchus Batches kit is formulated to produce a specific style of beer. Since the quality and alpha acid in hops vary sometimes significantly from one year to the next or from one bale to the next we adjust the varieties and amounts of hops in Bacchus Batches kit to provide consistent results.
