Keeping Keg Lines Clean

Keeping Keg Lines Clean

Just like your syphon hose and brewing equipment, keg lines, faucets, taps, etc., need to be cleaned for your draft beer to taste great and flow without excessive foaming. After finishing your favorite homebrew and cleaning your keg, the lines and can be cleaned by simply putting a solution of SuperFlush, Beer Line Cleaner (BLC), or P.B.W. in the keg, opening the picnic faucet into the sink or a bucket and forcing it through the beer lines with Co2. Opening and shutting the faucet several times will provide a better cleaning by pulsing the solution. After flushing the lines, disassemble the faucet and liquid disconnect and using the same cleaning solution, brush the insides. This is especially important after dispensing wheat beers.

Now if you are lucky enough to have a kegerator or converted refrigerator, the simplest way to clean these lines is with a keg cleaning kit. Simply remove the chrome faucet from the shank, attach the pump to the shank, open the sanke tap or for homebrewers disassemble the liquid disconnect and place the sanke top or liquid hose over a bucket and pump the SuperFlush through the system. Then flush a couple times with potable water. Before reattaching the chrome faucet, disassemble it and clean with the SuperFlush using a double ended faucet brush. While you have the brush in your hand, brush the shank as well. Check all the gaskets before reassembling to be sure they are not hard, cracked or worn.

These same cleaning practices should be followed after using a jockey box as well.
