Getting Malt Extract Out of the Can

Malt extract like honey, molasses and corn syrup when cool has a very high viscosity which makes it stick to the package. Warming this thick malt syrup before adding it to your boiling kettle will make removal much easier.

Fortunately, there is an easy remedy. Warm the can of extract before opening it. This can be done in a number of ways including:

  • If using malt extract in cans, warming may be done by submerging the can in a water bath and placing it in the oven at 200°F for about 30 minutes or putting it on the top shelf of the dishwasher during the drying cycle.

  • If using malt extract or honey in plastic containers,do not use the oven to warm the malt. Malt extract or honey in plastic containers as well as cans can be warmed by placing them in in a sauce pan, add water until the can or plastic container is half submerged, and put the sauce pan on the stove over low heat. Using either water bath method, roll the can periodically to mix it. The malt extract or honey will then be warm enough to pour freely when opened.

  • Put the can on the top shelf of the dishwasher during the dry cycle. If using malt extract or honey in plastic containers, this is not such a good idea.
