Our Poughkeepsie Porter gets its name from the town where James Vassar settled in 1793 and opened a brewery that produced alebeer and porterabout 15 gallons a day. If the Vassar name sounds vaguely familiar it is probably not because of the brewery but the college that received funding from James ’ son Matthew Vassar who took over the brewing operations after his fathers death.
